The Problem

What Is the Takata Defect?

Takata Corporation manufactured airbag inflators used by multiple major automakers. These inflators use ammonium nitrate as a propellant — a chemical that degrades over time, especially when exposed to heat and humidity.

When the propellant degrades, the inflator can explode with too much force — or in a manner that ruptures the metal canister. This sends razor-sharp metal fragments at high velocity into the vehicle cabin, striking drivers and passengers.

Unlike most defects that cause accidents, this one turns your vehicle's own safety system into a weapon. A minor fender-bender can trigger a fatal airbag deployment in an affected vehicle.

⚠ Do Not Ignore This Recall

NHTSA has classified some of these inflators as "Do Not Drive" — meaning the vehicle should not be operated until the recall is completed. If your vehicle is affected, schedule your free repair immediately.

🔥
Ammonium Nitrate Degradation
Heat and moisture cause the propellant to break down over years, making inflator explosions increasingly unpredictable and violent.
💥
Metal Shrapnel Risk
A ruptured inflator canister can spray jagged metal fragments into the cabin at speeds exceeding 200 mph — even in low-speed crashes.
⏳
Risk Increases Over Time
The longer a defective inflator stays in a vehicle, the more dangerous it becomes. Older vehicles in hot, humid climates face the highest risk.
🌡
Climate Is a Factor
High-humidity states and those with extreme temperature swings — like Florida, Texas, and the Gulf Coast — see elevated risk levels.
✅
The Fix Is Free
Replacement inflators are fully covered by the manufacturer. There is no cost to vehicle owners for parts, labor, or the MRT service visit.
The Mechanism

How a Defective Inflator Fails

Understanding the failure sequence helps explain why this recall is so urgent — and why a "working" airbag can still be dangerous.

1
Crash Detected
Sensors detect a collision and send an electrical signal to the airbag inflator within milliseconds — just as designed.
2
Propellant Ignites
In a healthy inflator, ammonium nitrate burns in a controlled manner to rapidly fill the airbag. In a degraded inflator, it burns unpredictably fast.
3
Canister Ruptures
The overpressure from the uncontrolled burn fractures the metal inflator housing — a part that was never designed to fail.
4
Shrapnel Launches
Fragments of the metal canister are propelled through the airbag at extreme velocity — directed straight at the driver and front passenger.
5
Injuries Occur
Lacerations to the face, neck, and torso are common. In 19 confirmed cases in the U.S., these injuries were fatal — in crashes that should have been survivable.
!
The Cruel Irony
The safety system meant to save your life in a crash can become the most dangerous object in your vehicle. Do not wait — get your free repair today.
TIMELINE
History

How We Got Here

The Takata crisis unfolded over two decades — a slow-moving catastrophe that took years of injuries and deaths before regulators and automakers acted at scale.

2000
First Failures Reported
Honda reports early inflator ruptures internally. No public disclosure or recall action taken.
2008
First U.S. Death
A woman in Virginia is killed when a Takata inflator ruptures in a low-speed accident — the first confirmed U.S. fatality.
2008–2012
Limited Regional Recalls
Automakers begin issuing small, regional recalls targeting high-humidity states. Scope is repeatedly underestimated.
2014
Congressional Investigation
U.S. Senate holds hearings on Takata's conduct. Evidence emerges that the company concealed test data showing inflator failures.
2015
Largest U.S. Recall Declared
NHTSA declares the Takata airbag defect a safety crisis and mandates a nationwide recall — the largest in U.S. automotive history at the time.
2017
Takata Files Bankruptcy
Facing $10B+ in liabilities and a criminal plea agreement, Takata Corporation files for bankruptcy. Key Safety Systems acquires the business.
2020
Mobile Recall Team Founded
MRT is established specifically to solve the repair gap — millions of vehicles still unrepaired because owners never visit dealerships.
Today
Millions Still Unrepaired
Despite years of recalls, millions of vehicles with defective Takata inflators remain on U.S. roads. The recall is still actively ongoing.
Service Coverage & Risk Zones

Where We Operate — And Why It Matters

NHTSA has categorized states into risk zones based on climate conditions. Higher heat and humidity accelerate inflator degradation — making timely repair even more critical in Zone A states.

U.S. map showing Takata recall risk zones by state — Zone A (red), Zone B (yellow), Zone C (green)
Zone A
Highest Priority — Immediate Risk
Hot, humid climates that cause the fastest propellant degradation. NHTSA has issued "Do Not Drive" orders for some vehicles in these states. Repair is most urgent.
Florida, Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina, Hawaii, California
Zone B
Elevated Risk — Repair Soon
Moderate heat and humidity. Inflator degradation is slower but still occurs. These vehicles should be repaired without delay.
Arizona, Nevada, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Kentucky, Tennessee, Virginia, North Carolina, Maryland, Pennsylvania, and others
Zone C
Lower Risk — Still Required
Cooler, drier climates slow degradation — but the recall is mandatory regardless of zone. These vehicles must still be repaired.
Washington, Oregon, Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, Colorado, Utah, North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, New York, New England states, Alaska
Mobile Recall Team services all zones. Regardless of your state's risk classification, if your vehicle has an open recall we will come to your home or office and complete the repair at no cost to you.
